The Underfloor Insulation Company
Installing eco solutions to keep the heat in your property
About Us
ECO Underfloor Insulation Specialists North London
Fed up with sky high energy bills AND a cold house with some rooms you only use in the warm weather? The reason for this may be your timber floor is uninsulated and probably also has large gaps between the floorboards plus nail holes and other pathways for cold air to be drawn into the house. It doesn’t have to be this way. You can have a warm room AND lower energy bills but to achieve this you need to insulate under the floor.
The Underfloor Insulation Company are a small north London Company that specialises in underfloor insulation for period Edwardian and Victorian houses with suspended timber floors. Our unique selling point (USP) is that we can fit the insulation from under the floor whilst the room remains in use (minimal disruption). Taking up the floorboards to do such work is very disruptive.

Importance of ECO underfloor solutions
Underfloor insulation is a crucial aspect of maintaining an energy-efficient home.
By installing insulation beneath the floorboards homeowners achieve lower energy bills, elimination of draughts and increased comfort during cold days.
By preventing heat loss through the floor, insulation helps maintain a cozy atmosphere indoors even when temperatures drop outside. This ensures that residents can enjoy their living spaces without feeling chilly or needing additional layers of clothing.
Reduce energy use
The primary advantages of underfloor insulation is its ability to reduce energy consumption.
Stop lossing heat
Insulation acts as a barrier that prevents heat loss and draughts through the floor.
Lower heating bills
Significant cost savings on energy bills, as less energy is required to maintain a warm indoor environment.
Benefits of underfloor insulation
Keep your house warm and stops cold air coming up through the floor.
Perfect for period properties
Timber floored Victorian and Edwardian houses lose masses of heat through their floors. Timber floors are also very draughty. Although it is nice to have exposed timber floors, there are always gaps between the floorboards and below the thin floorboards is effectively the ‘outside’. Therefore without insulation timber floors are very expensive and uncomfortable and you may as well live outside.
Our installation approach involves minimum disruption to the household (rooms can remain in use during the work), minimises any damage to the existing floorboards and also we believe is a lower cost solution than taking up the floorboards. Many floors can be accessed from a cellar or from the ‘crawl space’ below the floor. We suggest only taking up the minimum boards to gain access to the underfloor ‘crawl space’. A trap door can then be made and the boards replaced. Effectively the work can proceed with minimal disruption.

Sustainable ECO solutions
For insulation we only use natural materials such as wool, hemp or wood fibre. A flexible insulation is essential as floor joists are rarely parallel and insulation must be 100% between the joists to be really effective.
Mesh is used to keep the insulation in place and prevent sagging over time. It ensures that the insulation remains intact and maintains its effectiveness throughout its lifespan.
Opting for natural ECO materials for insulation offers excellent thermal properties and they also contribute to sustainability by reducing our reliance on synthetic products.

Stewart Mcilroy
About Me
I live in Muswell Hill, North London and have been interested in sustainability and energy efficient homes for many years. I have learnt by experience on my own and friends houses what can be practically done to reduce energy costs and make an old house more comfortable to live in. I am now looking to make this experience more widely available. My former career was as a civil engineer followed by business consulting mainly in railways and infrastructure.
My own sustainable home
I have fitted underfloor insulation to a number of houses in the North London area including my own house in Muswell Hill N10. Our house is regularly open to the public as part of Green Open Homes via Muswell Hill Sustainability Group Visit Website

What we do
We install insulation under the floorboards in period properties. We can also do other insulation as required.
Installed without the mess
Our method involves accessing the underfloor 'crawl space' or the cellar to fit the insulation. This approach does not require the customer to empty the room or endure prolonged disruption. By carefully selecting which boards need to be removed, we can gain access the underfloor area while leaving most of the existing floor intact. Taking up all the floorboards often damages the boards, takes a lot of time and causes disruption.
After removing boards we create a trap door leading into the crawl space below. This approach allows us to work efficiently and effectively without causing unnecessary damage to floorboards or disruption.

Without removing floorboards
Upon completion of our work we ensure all boards are replaced seamlessly so that there is little visible evidence of our intervention. This attention to detail not only preserves the aesthetic appeal of your home but also ensures that you can enjoy your new floor.
Our approach prioritizes minimal disturbance and inconvenience for our customers. By accessing underfloor spaces and creating trap doors, we can complete our work more efficiently. With this method, you won't have to empty your room or live with disruption throughout this process.
Once work is complete the underfloor area may also be used for storage of your wine, camping gear or children's toys etc.
For home owners with bare wooden floors, the best time to get the insulation fitted is in association with sanding the floor. This work may also involve making repairs to floor boards where necessary. The Underfloor Insulation Company offers all of these services with references provided on request.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the questions clients typically ask about our installation process and benefits of underfloor insulation. If you have any further questions please feel free to get in contact.
1. Why is insulating under my floor important?
Houses with uninsulated suspended wooden floors lose a significant amount of heat through the floor as cold draughts are drawn into the house. Remember under the floor is effectively ‘outside’ the house. Even if the owner attempts to fill all the gaps between the boards this will never be 100% and still means only the thickness of a floorboard exists between the ‘inside’ and the ‘outside’ of the house. Uninsulated wooden floors are also cold to walk on.
2. Will insulation reduce necessary ventilation?
Insulation is fitted beneath the boards and supported by mesh. Insulation does not butt up against the boards so an air gap remains. Joists are still exposed to the air. Draughts through a floor are draughts and not desired ventilation.
3. Will use of wool attract moths or damp?
Wool insulation is treated for moths. Wool is hydroscopic and doesn’t become damp when absorbing moisture.
4. Will my floorboards need to be taken up?
We try to avoid taking up the floorboards as this is disruptive and damages the boards. However, some boards will need to be removed temporarily to creat an access hatch(s).
5. I have a cellar, so can that be used for access to the underfloor space?
The aim would be to use existing access points where-ever practical. Access to the room underfloor space can often be achieved via the cellar under the hall. However, to gain sufficient access to the underfloor a combination of access points is often required.
6. My underfloor space is not very deep and looks to be inaccessible?
A crawl space of a minimum of 350mm is usually sufficient to fit insulation from underneath. Actual minimum depth will vary on a case by case basis. If the depth is very tight more boards will need to be taken up.
7. Can I retain access to the underfloor space after the work is complete?
Yes. We recommend retaining an access hatch(s) to enable ongoing access to the underfloor area. This space can in fact be a very useful storage place (see pictures).
8. Is manual fitting of wool or hemp better than spray insulation from a robot?
Underfloor spaces are rarely flat and often have old pipes, masonry and other obstructions lying around. Hence, a robot would need to be very agile to gain access to everywhere required to ensure 100% insulation. Our approach clears out the debris and lays a DPM to create a clean environment before the insulation is fitted. Our approach is also 100% to remove all draughts. Sprayed insulation is also not a natural material.
9. How does the underfloor insulation co-exist with the underfloor pipes?
All underfloor water pipes should be separately insulated (often they are not). As part of our service we first of all ensure all pipes are insulated with snap-on foam pipe insulation. The underfloor insulation may then go on above or below the insulated pipes depending on the level of the pipes relative to the floor joists.
10. How can I best use my underfloor space for storage?
The underfloor space in most houses is an under-used storage space. To minimise the effort in retrieving ‘stuff’ from under the floor we recommend limiting storage to things that are readily accessible from the access hatch such as a rolled up tent etc. Bespoke storage boxes on wheels may also be used for smaller items with the box then ‘pushed’ away from the access hatch. A simple ring on the box, plus a hook on a stick are later used to pull the storage box back to the access hatch. All storage solutions are bespoke to the individual floor in question.
11. Do I still need underfloor heating if I get my floor insulated?
The answer is generally no. I have seen several underfloor systems which the homeowner does not use due to the prohibitive cost. In some cases underfloor heating has been installed without insulation on the cold side making the system extremely inefficient. Where underfloor insulation has been fitted (and heating pipes insulated properly) it is perfectly possible to heat the room in question with the existing heating system.
